Green Scythe Fair

Every year in the heart of the Somerset Levels, farmers, hedgelayers, horse drivers and land workers from all over the country and beyond gather for the Green Scythe Fair – a one day rural event that sees scythers compete to be the fastest and most quality mower.

Running for nearly two decades, the fair is a hodge-podge celebration of rural and traditional skills. Sychronised sycthing, haymaking races, a scything vs. strimmer race and an abundance of activity on the periphery from work horse workshops to blacksmithing fill the meadow. All culminating with the scything championship finals – a serious affair – where seasoned veterans, past winners and new underdogs scythe their hearts out under the summer sun in the hope to be the year’s champion.
